Please ensure that all of the responses are your original work and are not copy and pasted directly from the module or any other outside source. Each response will be read and evaluated by Global Health University staff. The student will receive an evaluation of Honors, Pass, Low Pass, or Fail on their Global Health University Transcript.
We advise that you read the courses and articles and
write your responses in a Word document that you can save on your computer
. Then, after you have written an answer to each question, you may copy and paste your work from the Word document onto this form.There is no deadline for completion.
Grading Criteria
Honors: Responses are of excellent quality, demonstrating critical analysis and a comprehensive understanding about the course material.
Pass: Responses are of good quality and demonstrates understanding of key concepts, but lacks in-depth analysis of course materials.
Low Pass: Responses are of mediocre quality and demonstrate minimal effort.
Fail: Responses are of poor quality and demonstrate a lack of effort or lack of understanding, and/or responses are plagiarized.

Global Health Course
Module 1: What are the essential best practices in global health?
Module 2: What is local capacity building? Describe at least two examples of building local capacity.
Module 3: What are the two main roles that local doctors should play in partnerships?
Module 4: Describe the features of an evaluation system and briefly discuss the four main components of valid metrics.
Module 5: What is the problem of the "last mile" and how can this problem, along with financial and education barriers, be resolved?
Module 6: What are the six aims of quality medical care? Why is it important to ensure that these are provided alongside financial resources?
Module 7: What harm can be caused by volunteers in a healthcare delivery setting? What barriers can volunteers help to reduce and how?
Module 8: Describe ways in which short-term interventions can have a negative impact on communities, and also describe how untrained volunteers can have a negative impact.
Module 9: What commonly occurs when equipment is donated which hasn’t been requested, or which isn’t in quality condition?
Module 10: Identify two reasons why it is important to compensate local and permanent staff.
Module 11: What are some of the main causes of brain drain and what can be done to reduce brain drain?
Outcomes Are Essential in Global Health
In a performance assessment, what is an output and what is an outcome? For each of the three case studies presented in the module, list the output and the outcome of the project.

Community-Level Challenges in Global Health Delivery
Module 1: How do social factors influence how an individual experiences an illness? Discuss how healthcare providers can work to better understand and empathize with the patient’s disease experience.
Module 2: What are common causes of rumors of misconceptions in healthcare initiatives implemented in developing regions? How can these misconceptions be alleviated?
Module 3: Describe how misinformation about medical practices spreads in North America. What can be done to reduce the spread of misinformation?
Module 4: Identify advantages and disadvantages in the role of traditional healers in healthcare.
Module 5: Explain how weather influences the health of those in developing regions.
Module 6: How does the role of family dynamics influence a woman’s access to healthcare?
Module 7: Why is it important to have knowledge of local verbal and nonverbal forms of communication? Identify creative ways to implement health initiatives when there is a communication barrier.
Clinic Challenges in Resource-Poor Settings Course
Module 1: Why is it so imperative now for developing countries to build up their resources for the health of their population?
Module 2: What is ‘brain drain’ and what are practical ways in which governments can reduce it?
Module 3: Solar energy has emerged as a popular solution to providing electricity in many developing countries that are without it. However solar energy is far from a perfect solution. List some of the major drawbacks to using solar energy in a developing country.
Module 4: How can Cola-Cola help to reduce medication shortages?
Module 5: Transportation is often a necessity to access health care in both rural and urban areas. However, more important than the provision of cars is the sustainability of maintaining them. From the case study in the module, describe how Riders for Health sustains its transportation model in The Gambia?
Module 6: What are some negative consequences that can happen if a patient is misdiagnosed?
Module 7: How is mobile communication helping to stop drug counterfeiting in Nigeria?
Module 8: Describe the importance of nutrition when treating communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria.
Module 9: The Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has stated "True poverty is not a function of income, but of freedom and choice." Explain what this phrase means and provide examples on how some organizations are providing more choices in water and sanitation resources.
Module 10: What are Web 2.0 technologies and what are the benefits and drawbacks to using them to increase transparency and knowledge sharing among users?
Overview of Spending at the Base of the Pyramid
For those at the Base of the Pyramid it is essential to place important value in life-saving services and risk mitigation. For example, microinsurance is an emerging program in the microfinance world to protect people from illness and sudden disasters. Describe the benefits and challenges to implementing these microinsurance programs.
Issues in Medication Management
Identify two barriers to medication adherence, two ways to increase adherence, and identify two possible effects of non-adherence.
Cultural Competency Course
Module 1: How can those working abroad minimize their culture shock?
Module 2: Describe two symptoms of culture shock and briefly explain the four phases of cultural adjustment.
Module 3: Define the “Mzungu” factor and briefly explain what can be done to help cope with this experience.
Module 4: Define “ethnocentrism” and identify two reasons why it is problematic.
Module 5: Distinguish between monochronic time and polychronic time. Give an example of how these differing concepts of time can affect someone in a new setting.
Module 6: Identify two factors that should be taken into account when interacting with patients, and also describe two factors that should be taken into account when interacting with interpreters.
Module 7: Briefly describe the six stages of Dr. Milton Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity.
Module 8: Why is it essential to develop an understanding of local social etiquette?
Module 9: Identify two factors that influence attitudes towards service and briefly discuss how community service is viewed differently between India and Denmark.
Module 10: Define “Cultural Humility” in your own words and briefly explain its importance.
Module 11: Identify three ways to minimize the impact of reverse culture shock.
Volunteer Ethics and Professionalism Course
Module 1: Identify three examples of unprofessional behavior that volunteers can exhibit while working abroad. How can unprofessional behavior among volunteers lead to lasting negative consequences in the community in which they are working?
Module 2: As discussed in this module, unprofessional behavior can result from culture shock, ethnocentrism, value differences as well as misguided expectations and motivations. Briefly explain how each factor can lead to different types of unprofessional behavior.
Module 3: Why is it important to reflect on motives and familiarize yourself with the potential work you will be doing before going abroad?
Module 4: Identify the six traits of a successful international volunteer. How can these traits be cultivated?
Module 5: Describe the guidelines to which volunteers should adhere when observing surgeries and working in the clinic. Why is it important to follow these guidelines?
Case Studies: Cultural Competency in Action
Distinguish between the approaches taken by the successful bottom-up and top-down initiatives and the approaches taken by the unsuccessful bottom-up and top-down initiatives.
