Course Modules
The Complexities and Realities of Global Health
Global Health is a complex and multi-faceted field. Briefly describe four issues that may arise in global health work and explain how these can be overcome.
Maternal and Child Health Online Course
Module 1: Why are women at greater risk of facing barriers to health care? Distinguish between proximate and ultimate factors. How do proximate and ultimate factors influence the unique barriers that women face in health care?
Module 2: Why do children and adolescents face unique barriers and how are these barriers exacerbated for females? What implications do these barriers have for this population?
Module 3: What factors prevent women from accessing contraceptives? Why is it important to understand how the use of contraceptives varies by region?
Module 4: Describe the importance of prenatal and preconception care. Explain why women in developing regions face unique barriers to care. How can these barriers be eliminated?
Module 5: Identify advantages and disadvantages of breastfeeding. Why is it especially important for women in low and middle income countries to assess the use of baby formula versus breastfeeding?
Module 6: How can nutritional deficiencies lead to other illnesses? Why is it important to carefully assess the different methods available for increasing micronutrient intake before choosing one approach to implement?
Module 7: Explain how increased rates of child morbidity influence attitudes toward childbirth in low income countries versus those in high income countries. Although there are several proven interventions available to reduce child morbidity, what additional steps should be taken to fully implement these interventions in poor countries?
Module 8: Why is it important to consider environmental conditions when assessing health inequalities? How can environmental determinants be assessed in order to better understand how to improve the well-being of vulnerable populations?
Module 9: How have gender roles influenced the division of physical labor? How has this led to negative health consequences? What must development practitioners do to ensure that they do not exacerbate existing problems through the programs they initiate?
Module 10: Identify three unique barriers that developing regions face when trying to improve educational outcomes. Explain why education and, more specifically, the school environment is a determinant of health.
Module 11: Briefly describe how war and conflict affect the health of individuals and populations. Why are women and children at greater risk of these negative consequences of war?
Module 12: Why is it important to assess socioeconomic status when analyzing the problem of child marriage? What are the negative health consequences of child marriage?
Module 13: Describe the complementary but unique roles that educated mothers and teachers play in health promotion.
Module 14: Discuss how education has played an important role in vaccination initiatives, HIV/AIDS strategies, and malaria interventions.
Module 15: Identify several barriers to implementation of innovative initiatives in poor regions. How can these barriers be overcome?
Module 16: Why is it important for women to have access to social enterprise initiatives? Identify common elements that can be found in the five social enterprises discussed in the module and note how these elements have contributed to the success of these initiatives.
In-Utero Health and Interventions Course
Module 1: Why is it important to understand fetal health? How does prenatal nutrition impact the health of the fetus and eventually the health of the baby throughout childhood and beyond? Discuss indicators of poor prenatal nutrition and increased levels of stress.
Module 2: Reflecting on the case study discussed in this module, why is there increased skepticism about the causes of diabetes among the O’odham population? What implications does this have for poor regions and minority groups?
Module 3: You are asked to provide advice to a new not-for-profit organization that is focusing on improving maternal health in developing regions. Reflecting on the two organizations discussed in the module, what are key elements that you believe ought to be included to ensure successful implementation?
Gender, Power, and Health Online Course
Module 1: Distinguish between positive and negative aspects of family dynamics and health. Why is it important to assess gender and age dynamics in family structures when analyzing how health care is provided? How can gender and age hierarchies, inherent in familial structure, influence health outcomes?
Module 2: How have differences in gender dynamics led to negative health consequences? How have gender roles deteriorated the potential benefits of microfinance programs?
Module 3: When examining issues of violence and domestic violence, why is it important to take the cultural context into account?
Module 4: You are asked to consult for a non-profit organization that is beginning work to reduce child labor in developing regions. Where would you recommend that they begin to put their efforts and why?
Module 5: Discuss how gender roles influence alcohol consumption. Is alcohol consumption associated with domestic violence?
